Fat Guy Corner

Derby pick off by 2.5 lengths

Jeff Day — Sports Columnist Jeff Day — Sports Columnist The Kentucky Derby was a muddy mess Saturday evening, as the rain continued to pour down at Churchill Downs. The Fat Guy’s selection of Good Magic ran a heck of a race only to finish second to Justify, the betting public’s choice to win.

The race by Justify was a thing of beauty. I did not think Justify could hold on and get the job done, but he did.

The last time a horse won the Derby after not running as a 2-year-old was 1882. The curse of that trend is now over. Justify is proving to be the most talented horse. I can tell you he wins the Preakness, if he gets entered. He will win the first two legs of the Triple Crown, no doubt about that.

Good Magic coming in second place was a good payday for the Fat Guy, as I netted about 10 hundred dollar bills! The greatest two minutes in sports lived up to the hype with Justify in a dominating performance!

Rooting for the underdogs

The NHL hockey playoffs have two teams punching tickets to the conference finals. The Tampa Bay Lightning from the East eliminated the Boston Bruins, 4-1. The expansion Las Vegas Knights in the West have moved on taking out San Jose, 4-2. The other two series have not been decided yet at the time of this column.

The Knights’ story is fascinating to me, as they just keep winning. This is not a real expansion team, though, as many of these players are great hockey players, who were left unprotected because other teams didn’t want to pay their salaries. It is still a great story and I find myself rooting for them to win the Stanley Cup.

Time is up for VanGundy

The Detroit Pistons have fired Stan Van Gundy, aka SVG. Why it took this long is a mystery. I knew he was a long-goner as soon as the last game was finished. I mean, two years of no playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference? SVG was president of basketball operations and coach, which is in charge of all the roster and players on the court. It’s not like four years in control wasn’t enough to fix the Pistons. He simply didn’t get the job done in Motown!

The trade for Blake Griffin was a total panic move and a bad trade, which

Detroit is now stuck with. The big question is, who will be the next coach? Whoever it is needs to build around Blake Griffin and make the Pistons competitive.

I loved the SVG hire and thought the results would be better after going to the playoffs the first two years. He regressed in the last two years and is now unemployed!

Tale of two series

The NBA playoffs in the Eastern Conference are on a strange path and the Western Conference is following the script. The Western Conference will feature the Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors, as both will move on at 3-1 in their series. This is the match-up we all wanted to see in the West. Can Houston dethrone Golden State? The Rockets will be running into the red hot and healthy Warriors, which could be bad news for James Harden and crew. I will be rooting for the Rockets and hope to see them go to the NBA Finals.

The Eastern Conference-choking Toronto Raptors, the No. 1 seed will be eliminated by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The shocker is how easy the Boston Celtics are dismantling the Philadelphia 76ers. A Cleveland-Boston series is not what I expected to see. The Boston Celtics are playing without their two best players and playing well. The last thing I want to see is another Cleveland and Golden State NBA Championship series as three years of it is enough!

Boys of Summer update

The Detroit Tigers, the boys of summer, have been neglected by the Fat Guy so far in 2018. They are 14-19 and only 2.5 games behind the struggling Cleveland Indians. The Tigers have actually received decent starting pitching, which has been the shocker. The hitting has been pretty decent overall compared to the rest of MLB teams. The bullpen is not too bad, either. The overall play should have the Tigers closer to .500, but they are not. The Tigers have also benefited from playing some pretty weak baseball teams.

More on the Tigers next week. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
