Bob Seger tribute artist KatMandu to rock PIX Theatre on Jan. 20

LAPEER — The familiar sounds of Bob Seger will be echoing through the PIX Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m., brought to Lapeer County residents by the talented musicians of KatMandu.

KatMandu is the ultimate Bob Seger tribute band, faithfully recapturing the thrill that generations of Seger’s fans remember in a completely live performance. They recreate Seger’s greatest hits that have withstood the test of time and become classics. KatMandu features five metro Detroit-area professional musicians, dedicated to bringing the highest level of musicianship, and paying careful attention to recreate the sounds, energy, and rich harmonies that made Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band known as one of the best rock and roll bands of all time.

Pianist Dan McCarthy described the band as a group of musicians who dreamed of being rock stars from a young age. “Well, I wouldn’t say that we became rock stars, but we certainly get to live the dream when we take the stage,” he said. McCarthy himself joined the group in 2010, which was then known by a different name. In 2011, Tom Mulawka became their drummer and they changed the name to “KatMandu.” Lonnie Fletcher is a top-notch vocalist who captures the sound of Seger himself.

Rounding out the band is Kirk Nelson (lead guitar), Greg Simmerlein (bass), and Eric Kot (saxophone). Nelson, Simmerlein, and and McCarthy are responsible for the background vocal harmonies, which is a very important component in this band.

McCarthy said their dedication to practice and originality set them apart from other tribute bands. “We play the songs in the same key signatures that Bob Seger used in his records. We listen and try to duplicate each and every subtle nuance of the song and performance. Playing music is truly a privilege and we thrive to play and perform at our best.”

“He said their goal is for every member of the audience to go home thinking that they just attended a Bob Seger concert with the Silver Bullet Band,” said Center for the Arts Communications Director Katie Beth Chrismer. “When it comes to attention to detail, these guys truly cannot be beat.”

The band said they have some new material for their upcoming performances, with “Fire Down Below” and “We’ve Got Tonight” at least two new songs that will be added to their set. One of their favorite classics, “Bo-Diddley” will be an extended jam.
