Lions no turkey heading into Thanksgiving game

Jeff Day — Sports Columnist Jeff Day — Sports Columnist A ll of us in the newspaper business hate short deadlines. Because today is Thanksgiving that meant a very early deadline on Monday rather than my usual Tuesday night filing. It also meant the Detroit Lions had short deadlines after their game with the Chicago Bears Sunday, which, by the way, was a Detroit Lions victory. A thrilling 27-24 “Bearly” squeaker, as the Lions tried to blow a late lead. The Lions, as usual, were sleep walking and dug themselves an early 10-0 deficit.

Minnesota also won on Sunday over the Rams. The Vikings’ victory sets up a show down between the two clubs on Turkey Day at Ford Field. The Lions need to gobble up the Vikings or the NFC North chances are one hundred percent over with. I actually believe this is a mustwin for Detroit today. I think the Lions will not beat the stuffing out of Minnesota, but instead will grind out a small-margin win. The Lions will then hold the tie break over Minnesota having beaten them twice this season.

I will be in my seat rooting for a Lions’ win and I hope I eat turkey, and not crow! I hear the Lions roar? Do you? The Lions 20 and Minnesota 16.

Who set these schedules?

I want to voice some displeasure with college football scheduling, which has me throwing fits. We are late into the college football season with only a couple of crucial weeks left. Why is Alabama playing Mercer? Mercy sakes alive; it’s stupid! Why is Clemson playing the Citadel? That is also stupid! These are games that do not effect college football playoff standings and are totally worthless! All the teams chasing the four spots can’t make up any ground on Alabama or Clemson!

These games are cream puffs and need to be played in September, not deep into November. All of us college football fans want suspense and upsets, not blowout white washes.

I feel better getting that off my chest. It irritated me all day

U-M’s offense irritates me

The Michigan Wolverine offense is irritating and so disturbing to watch. I predicted the Badgers to win 20-10 over Michigan and I was close as the final was 24-10. The Michigan defense was solid all day long and Michigan hung around for a while with the Badgers. The offense was again the primary reason for the loss, as it stinks! The loss of quarterback Brandon Peters sealed the loss for Michigan. The Wisconsin Badgers stay undefeated and can still make the college football playoffs. The Wolverines now have a home game against the hated Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes have owned the Wolverines for the last 15 years and Saturday will be no different. The Wolverines will lose again and will lose large to Ohio State. The Scarlett and Gray 31 and Offensive Offense 13. The old rivalry has not been much of one lately, to say the least.

Winning ugly counts

The Michigan State Spartans defeated Maryland in some nasty weather in East Lansing Saturday. It was an ugly game, but a win is a win, as they say. The Spartans will close out with a road game against Rutgers. It has been a great bounce-back season for the Spartans.

There will be no NFL picks this week due to early press deadlines. I will update picks in my next column. Happy Turkey Day to all. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
