Kress excels in Motor City Bowl
Lapeer West grad and Central Michigan University senior linebacker Doug Kress set a new Motor City Bowl record for longest interception return last Tuesday when the Chippewas beat Middle Tennessee State, 31-14, at Ford Field.
Kress picked up the pass interception on the opening possession of the second half. Middle Tennessee’s quarterback was hit by a CMU lineman and Kress picked off the pass at the CMU 44-yard line. He then headed for the sideline and ran it in untouched, for a 56-yard score and the first defensive touchdown in the Motor City Bowl’s history.
Kress also had nine tackles. He made three solo tackles and had six assists during the game.
Central Michigan had a 14-0 first-quarter lead and increased that to 21-7 at the half. Kress’s run put the Chippewas up 28-7 in the third quarter, and a 48-yard field goal by CMU sealed the deal.
The Chippewas finished the MAC at 10-4 overall and won their first ever Division 1-A bowl title in school history. — L.P.
